Feast Day of the Madonna della Salute
21 November 2008

Tradition procession to the church built by Longhena in the fulfillment of a vow taken during the terrible 17th century plague. Every year a votive bridge is built crossing the Grand Canal, connecting the area of San Moisè and S. Maria del Giglio with Longhena's basilica. Tens of thousands of people make the pilgrimage to pay homage to the Madonna and to light a candle asking her to keep them in good health.

Paper World: Isabelle de Borchgrave meets Mariano Fortuny

Including clothes, accessories and trompe-l’oeil creations, the eighty-plus pieces in this show are all made of paper. Demonstrating the extraordinary skill and unmistakable talent of the Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave, the exhibition also offers an unusual account of the world of Mariano Fortuny, with the evocative works organised within his palazzo-museum to illustrate significant figures and episodes in his life.

Eduard Angeli Venice

On view are the latest works of the Austrain artist, a leading figure in the contemporary art world and a resident of Venice since 2001. The solo show offers paintings on rough jute fabrics or on papaer, created with coal, chalk and with a meticulous use of color. The subjects are visions, dissolves, omens in a powerfully symbolic and dreamlike suspended narrative. Catalogue is in Italian ad English, with articles by Rainer Metzger and Giandomenico Romanelli.

This is the first exhibition in Italy dedicated to the work of George Barbier (1882-1932), an artist, fashion illustrator and set designer who was a leading figure in the Art Deco movement. There will be 138 original illustrations from the Palazzo Mocenigo collection, together with material from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and various private collections.

Carlo Cardazzo: A New Vision for Art

Biennale Art 2009: 53rd International Art Exhibition

The Board of Directors of the Venice Biennale Foundation, chaired by Paolo Baratta, appointed Daniel Birnbaum as Director of the Visual Arts Sector, with specific responsibility as curator of the 53rd International Art Exhibition. The event will run June 7th to November 22nd, 2009. Born in Stockholm in 1963, Daniel Birnbaum has been the curator of institutions and exhibitions at an international level.

Feast of the Redeemer 2009

The Feast of the Redeemer is one of the Venetians' most treasured festivities. It falls on the third Sunday in July, and is a tourist attraction thanks to the spectacular firework display in the evening. The special moment of the festivity takes place on Saturday night: with the unbeatable backdrop of Saint Mark's Basin, a play of lights and reflections produce a kaleidoscope of colours with the silhouetted spires, domes and bell towers of the city behind.

The Historical Regatta 2009, Venice
6 September 2009

In the first Sunday in September there is the Regata Storica, the annual trial of strength and skill for the city's gondoliers and other expert rowers. The Regata Storica starts with a procession of decorated historic craft along the Grand Canal course, their crews all decked out in period dress.
